Floatzone Systems
Production systems for silicon (using the Floatzone process)
In the production of silicon crystals by the Floatzone method, the polycrystalline raw material is molten by induction in the vicinity of a high frequency coil without any crucible contact. The melt drop is “floating” and confined by its surface tension forces and electromagnetic forces. After dipping a single crystal seed into the melt drop from below, successive single crystal growth is performed by slowly pulling the seed downward, giving room to the solidifying material.
The advantage of the silicon grown by the Floatzone method lies in its extreme purity due to the absence of a contaminating crucible. This purity makes the Floatzone silicon superior especially in the application of power electronics and in the application of high efficiency solar cells.
The specific process causes high quality requirements to the Floatzone production system, which must be extraordinarily smooth and vibration-free in its movements while maintaining high cleanliness inside the chamber as well.
