Positive Ion Neutral Injector “PINI”
Characteristics
Research on fusion energy is basically plasma research on big machines. The design, engineering and manufacturing of these machines and their components is an essential part of the research. Knowledge from many fields have to be collected and combined to build and improve those research plants.
Energy extraction from fusion requires a dense plasma of deuterium and tritium that is heated to more than 100 Mill. °C. One of the heating methods is the neutral beam injection. PVA TePla manufactures neutral beam injectors for the relevant research institutes and experiments and also delivers a lot of special components and replacements needed in the periphery of those big research machines.
Positive ions are generated in a DC discharge in an ion source. Source walls and backplate are water-cooled; CoSm magnets keep the 5000°C hot plasma away from the walls.
In the last years sources for negative ions get established, in this version the discharge is driven by radio frequency waves into the ion source.
An accelerating system consists from 3 or 4 grid structures that are also water cooled. They are carried by coaxial arranged structures of oval ducts that are assembled and electrically insulated from each other by Al2O3 post insulators. Voltage up to 160 kV can be applied for accelerating the ions, a porclain insulator separates the ion source from the grounded support structures. The beam is neutralised by charge exchange while passing a neutraliser chamber filled with a thin hydrogen gas, residual ions are deflected by magnets. The neutral beam itself can transport up to 4.8 MW of additional energy in the fusion plasma.
PVA TePla has manufactured PINI’s as replacement and extension for the existing research institutes. Vacuum technique, special materials, their handling and treatment, modern manufacturing techniques like high temperature vacuum brazing, electron beam welding, precision milling of bigger parts and performance of complex test procedures have to be combined. By manufacturing PINI’s over many years PVA TePla has adopted a knowledge base that can also be applied to other projects.
